We used the Zorn technique of limited colour palette last time I ran this class and it had wonderful outcomes. There is something ‘safe’ about a limited palette! People used either acrylic or oil. The focus was on the subject as opposed to the medium.
We all produced an extensive palette of skin tones from just four colours which improved confidence when the time came to paint the reflection. A warm up was done with our hand as the subject, noting curves, shading, length, perspective. The main focus of the self portrait was distilling the construction of the eyes in to layers, lines and levels.
