Every year turtle doves take the perilous journey from the UK to Mali in the Autumn and then back again in the spring.
They weigh only 140g and yet they travel more than 11,000 km. The Turtle Dove is now the UKs fastest declining breed of bird. Between 1995 and 2004 the number of breeding turtle doves in the UK fell by 93%. There are now just 9 turtle doves for every 100 that used to fill the English countryside 40 years ago.
This project aims to educate and encourage the public of Britain to plant #wildflowers and #hedgerows www.operationturtledove.org from the organisers Ann Lamb #jeweller and Demelza Craven #writer
