This was the call to Artists by Hugh Pilkington for
Cley16 IN NORFOLK NOW
Exhibition dates: 7 July – 7 August 2016
The 2016 NNEP exhibition in St Margaret’s Church, Cley and surrounding sites, will focus on contemporary art in Norfolk. When accepting the invitation to select and curate the exhibition I thought it would be interesting to identify what is the contemporary art being made in Norfolk today, how large is the audience and who are the patrons that might support that work.
Who are the artists who could make up a new Norfolk or Norwich School? Who are the successors of Cotman and Crome; of Self and Ackling; of Emerson and Payne Jennings? Who are the landscape painters? Who are the abstract painters? Who are the sculptors? Who works in other interesting and challenging formats?
Who is living and working in Norfolk now and what are they making? Who has moved to Norfolk to make it their creative home? Who has stayed in Norfolk after graduation from University? Who has always been in Norfolk? Who are the Outsider artists?
In making next year’s Cley exhibition I should like to be able to address some of these questions. The exhibition can only be as good as the submissions from which selections can be made. This exhibition is for you, so please submit an application. If your work is selected you will be part of the answer to some of these questions.
